Welcome to the Willow Class

This is the class page for the Y1 / Y2 Willow Class.  We hope that it is a useful place to view pictures of activities and learning experiences as well as locate planning documents and other useful information.

Class Texts

Poles Apart by Jeanne Willis & Jarvis is our key fiction text in Autumn 1 and will be used for our narrative writing. It is a funny story all about some lost penguins and an adventurous polar bear!

Queen Victoria's Bathing Machine by Gloria Whelan is the key fiction text for Autumn 2 term. Based on the real Victorian trend of bathing machines, it is a story about how Prince Albert creates an invention which allows Queen Victoria to swim in the ocean whilst maintaining her modesty!

At the start of the Spring 1 term we will be doing a short writing unit which blends learning about recount writing with experimenting with poetry.  The focus text is Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena.  The children will complete some immersive work around bus journeys before moving onto exploring alliteration and rhyme and applying these skills independently to create imaginative descriptions about the characters that the main character CJ meets.

Poetry

We started our arctic themed writing unit with the poem Polar Bear by Spike Milligan. The children rehearsed different sections of the poem and performed together. We all particularly enjoyed making actions for the end of the poem!

We started our writing unit in Autumn 2 by studying the poem The Chimney Boy's Story by Wes Magee.  The children were shocked by the working conditions of young people during Victorian times whilst working as chimney sweeps.  They used role play to explore the dynamic between masters and working boys or servants.

At the start of Spring 1 the children will learn about alliteration and similes within poetry and have a go at using these writing techniques within their own poetry writing.
