This term in Literacy we are using the book 'Handa's Surprise' by Eileen Browne. This links with our topic of Travel and Transport and will be learning even more about the setting of the book - Kenya! From the beginning, we have had lots of questions that we wanted answering about the story e.g. Where did Handa get the fruit from? How far away does Akeyo live? How did you not know the fruit was going missing? Etc. So, we decided to question one another pretending to be Handa, and this gave us some ideas of answers - but not fully! Then we thought the only way to know the real answers to these questions was to ask Handa herself! We are currently in the process of writing Handa a letter and hopefully receive some answers back! We are also using the book to become more familiar with all of the exotic fruits - mango, guava, passion fruit, pineapple - we even had a taste of all of them! We really liked the pineapple, the banana and even the passion fruit! We also used the fruit to make an exotic smoothie, it was delicious! We wrote a recipe of how to make one, come into our classroom and have a look through the recipe book!
